Basic greetings

¡Hola! – The most common and universal way to greet someone in Spanish. You can use it in any situation and with anyone.

¿Cómo estás? – A friendly way to ask how someone is doing. Common responses include «Estoy bien, gracias» or «Muy bien, ¿y tú?» (I’m fine, thank you» or «Very well, and you?»)

Buenos días / Buenas tardes / Buenas noches – These are more specific ways to greet according to the time of day. «Buenos días» is used in the morning, «buenas tardes» in the afternoon, and «buenas noches» when it’s nighttime.

Mucho gusto — It’s nice to meet you
